A wise person once told me a way to stop yourself from going down the rabbit hole of worry, overthinking and fear, my mind jumping ahead to what could be or what might be, was to visualize myself at a train station, going on a trip.
Many trains at the station are destined for unpleasant, painful journeys, those that bring extreme worry, difficult, absolute outcomes, filled with fear, sadness and regret. Some bring thoughts of doubt, blame, hopelessness and misplaced responsibility.
Others though, are destined for awesome adventures, filled with love, compassion, kindness and joy. Gatherings with friends, going to a concert, dancing the night away, going out for a lovely dinner, going on a date, going for a walk. Trips that bring forth possibilities, those that remind us that we may have been on this trip before, but this time, it may have a different outcome. These journeys remind us that we are different people on this trip, stronger and more confident, really knowing the truth of the situation and ourselves, because we know our own truth and can trust what we know.
You have a choice in this moment, you can get on that train and have a wonderful experience, one that fills you up, lifts you up, with love and compassion, is a calm experience that rejuvenates all of you, by bringing a balanced perspective that draws on your inner wisdom. Or, you get on the other train, that has a harsher, darker, faster dive, endless in fear, second guessing, fed by worst case scenarios, drama, and other peoples opinions and judgements.
If you do decide that you are going to get on that train, try not to stay on too long. It can seem like any motion is better than none, but the ride can take a toll. Maybe instead just spend some time on the platform. Sit for a moment. Muster a deep breath. Be patient. Another train is always on the way.
